US Officials Warn of Potential Israeli Ground Incursion into Lebanon Amid Rising Tensions

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. is closely monitoring the possibility of a limited Israeli ground incursion into Lebanon as Israeli forces mobilize along their northern border, U.S. officials reported on Saturday. While no decision has been made by Israel, this movement raises concerns over escalating tensions in the region.

According to a senior administration official, the U.S. assessment is based on Israel’s troop deployments and the clearing of border areas, which could signal preparations for a potential ground incursion into Lebanon. Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Peter Lerner confirmed that the military is weighing several options, including a possible ground operation, but emphasized that this is only one of the scenarios under consideration.

Israel’s military preparations come as the country seeks to secure its northern border, aiming to return more than 60,000 residents to their homes near Lebanon. In recent weeks, tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, the militant group operating in southern Lebanon, have escalated, increasing the likelihood of a military confrontation.

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has acknowledged that Israel is preparing for the potential entry of ground forces into Lebanon, though Israeli officials have expressed hope that such an operation can be avoided. However, the mobilization of forces signals a serious consideration of this option if the situation continues to deteriorate.

U.S. President Joe Biden, in response to the rising tensions, has called for a ceasefire in Lebanon and urged both sides to pursue diplomatic solutions to prevent further conflict. Despite these efforts, the situation remains volatile.

A ground incursion by Israel into Lebanon would mark a significant escalation in the region, with potential repercussions for broader Middle East stability. The last time Israel conducted a major ground operation in Lebanon was in 2006 during the Second Lebanon War, a conflict that resulted in significant casualties on both sides.

As the U.S. and international community continue to advocate for restraint, the focus remains on preventing further military escalation. However, the increasing presence of Israeli forces near the Lebanese border keeps the possibility of a ground incursion looming over the ongoing crisis.
