Escalation in the Middle East: Israel Launches Largest Ever Strikes on Iran in Retaliation for Missile Attack
In a significant escalation, Israel’s military has launched a sweeping series of airstrikes on Iranian targets following a recent attack by the Iranian regime. According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), this operation was initiated in response to an October 1st missile assault in which Iran launched a volley of 180 ballistic missiles aimed at Israel. Most of these missiles were intercepted with assistance from U.S. defense systems.
The Israeli air offensive, reportedly involving around 140 fighter jets, targeted critical Iranian military assets, including missile storage sites, drone facilities, and air defense installations in and around Tehran. Israeli forces also struck Iranian military bases in Syria, aiming to dismantle the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ network across the region. Explosions echoed across the Iranian capital and surrounding areas, with local media reporting that Karaj, west of Tehran, was among the impacted locations.
In a public statement, Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant underscored that these airstrikes are “precise and deadly,” designed to demonstrate Israel’s right and resolve to protect its sovereignty. He noted that Israel’s campaign would persist until the Iranian regime recognizes the consequences of its repeated attacks against Israel and its allies.
The U.S. government was notified of Israel’s planned operation but did not participate in the airstrikes. President Biden and Vice President Harris were briefed on the developments, with a National Security Council spokesperson stating that Israel’s actions were a “measured exercise in self-defense.” The Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, stated that the operation is expected to send a “painful message” to the Iranian regime, aimed at deterring further aggression from Iran’s military and affiliated regional proxies, including Hezbollah.
Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has condemned the strikes, vowing retribution for recent Israeli actions that included the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other key figures in the region.
As the situation intensifies, both nations remain on high alert, with further repercussions anticipated across an already volatile Middle East.
